A Guide to Iron and Steel: Pictures in the Hagley Museum and Library
Hagley has what must be the most comprehensive photographic archive of the Iron and Steel industry in the nation, if not the world. This collection guide was written in 1986 by Jon Williams, the former Andrew W. Mellon. Curator of Prints and Photographs at Hagley. Along with fifty representative photographs, Williams includes a comprehensive overview of eight collections from specific companies, he also gives the reader some brief notes on the origins and development of the firms, focusing on their geographic place of manufacture. These companies include Lukens Steel, Pennsylvania and Maryland Steel, Midvale Steel, Taylor-Wharton Iron and Steel, Alan Wood Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Phoenix Steel, and Vulcan Iron Works. The short introduction by Williams is a very informative essay on the role of photography in the American iron and steel industry, and how its usage has changed and grown over the years.
